With great sadness, Swift, Currie, McGhee & Hiers, LLP, announces the passing of Atlanta-based attorney Casey “Case” Smartt. Smartt passed away on January 16, 2022 at the age of 32. Though he was just beginning his seventh year of practicing law, he had already earned a reputation as a rising leader in his field with a passion for service to his clients and community.

“Case only recently joined our firm, but his expertise, creativity and commitment to excellence left a striking impression that will not be forgotten by his colleagues and clients,” said Mike Rosetti, managing partner of Swift Currie. “Beyond his legal acumen, Case was a kind and passionate person and a devoted father who will be missed by many. We are thankful for the time we had with Case, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and many loved ones.”

A native of Montana, Smartt graduated from Montana State University-Billings where he was a member of the men’s track and field team. After graduating in 2012, he went on to earn his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he received the Irving P. Andrews Award for Outstanding Law Graduate. He began his legal career in his home state of Colorado as in-house counsel for a global brewing company before moving to Atlanta in 2015, when he served as a litigation attorney for one of the nation’s largest insurance companies. Smartt entered private practice in June 2017, sharpening his litigation skills with various renowned firms before joining Swift Currie at the end of 2021. He was a 2020 graduate of the State Bar of Georgia Young Lawyers Division Leadership Academy and was known as an up-and-coming leader in the profession.

Outside of his practice, Smartt served as a mentor for talented children from difficult backgrounds. He was passionate about the great outdoors and enjoyed spending free-time hiking and snowboarding. Smartt described himself as a proud supporter of the Denver Broncos and an even prouder supporter of his five-year old daughter.

Smartt was a dedicated litigator, defending clients in complex coverage disputes. He represented multinational and regional insurance companies and large businesses against matters related to fraud, bad faith, commercial litigation, insurance coverage and property claims, as well as premises and professional liability. Case regularly litigated high-dollar claims before state and federal courts throughout the country and represented clients in alternative dispute resolution. Case handled all phases of civil litigation and advised insurers through policy coverage issues. He had significant experience leading jury and bench trials involving multimillion-dollar claims.

Case was known for his in-depth knowledge of an array of key statutes important to his clients, as well as his detail-oriented and creative mindset for analyzing the unique intricacies of each case with a goal to provide high-quality service that led to client-focused results.
