David Williams was highlighted in the Birmingham Business Journal on June 1, 2018 for joining the charter board of Build UP, the nation’s first and only workforce development model providing low-income, Birmingham-area youth with career-ready skills through secondary and early-post secondary academic coursework, hands-on training at real construction jobsites and a glide path to home ownership. As one of three charter board members, Williams will serve a leadership role on the legal advisory committee for the organization, which is currently in the pilot stage with a class size of 20 students.

Students enrolled in the six-year program will earn a high school diploma, an associate degree in their chosen field and professional credentials applicable in the real estate and construction sectors upon completion. The students will rehabilitate 20 abandoned properties into like-new duplexes, and after securing jobs or continuing their education at four-year colleges and universities, they will take over the deeds to the properties as homeowners and landlords.
