Benefits Manager

Classification: Exempt

Reports To: Human Resources Director

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Job Summary:

The Benefits Manager is responsible for directing and planning the day-to-day operations of group benefits programs (group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, workers' compensation, life insurance, flexible spending plan, etc.). This position provides excellent customer service and designs quality benefits plans. The Benefits Manager continually investigates new benefits programs, improves existing programs and supervises and monitors benefits administration. This role is part of the Human Resources team and works with the Human Resources Director to support the goals of the organization.


  • Administer employee benefits programs such as medical, dental, vision plans; life insurance and accident plans; temporary disability programs; auxiliary programs; and wellness programs
  • Act as the subject matter expert on benefits, ensure plans and programs remain in compliance with all federal, stand and/or local health and welfare laws
  • Work closely with the firm’s benefits broker to evaluate carrier quotes and make recommendations to management; develop firm cost information for new plans and make premium cost share recommendations to management
  • Implement new plans or changes to existing plans by preparing announcement materials, plan summary documents and other communications to employees
  • Counsel partners and employees on existing benefits
  • Manage benefits enrollment process for annual open enrollment and all new hires
  • Manage benefits changes associated with qualifying life events and termination of employment
  • Proactively identify and manage risks and issues related to plan administration, design, communications, etc.
  • Ensure vendors and carriers are providing excellent levels of service, competitive pricing and appropriate results
  • Process and administer all leave-of-absence requests and disability paperwork; medical, personal, disability and FMLA
  • Effectively interpret FMLA and ADA implications as they relate to leave of absences/disabilities
  • Administer workers’ compensation coverage and maintain required postings
  • Manage the firm’s wellness program and initiatives

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word or related software
  • Ability to maintain confidential information

Education and Experience:

  • 4-year bachelor’s degree in HR or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of benefits experience, preferably in a law firm or professional
    services environment
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear
  • The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-time position with a 40-hour work week
  • Workdays are Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to
    5:30 p.m.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand
